Often the words 'wire' and 'cable' are used interchangeably. In some cases, "wire" denotes messages sent within the confines of the United States and "cable" refers to the messages transmitted overseas. Others use "wire" to mean a transfer of funds by telephone rather than by cable, telex, or telegram.
